First Christmas on a boat

We moved onto Wotan, our first boat, in November 2011. With no children to fairly share the festive period with amongst grandparents we took the opportunity to spend Christmas in our first home, together.

With no 'fridge' and only a cool box on board our Christmas turkey and meats spent their time on our deck (in the UK it was cold enough out there to act as a fridge) to protect from birds, cats, other marina visitors we also put them in an insulated box which had previously been fitted under the seats in Wotan and filled it with some ice, just to be doubly sure of the temperature.

Our cooker was an old 1970s Calor gas caravan/boat cooker. It worked just fine, and the only reason we later upgraded was because of our new requirements for safety features with children around. That said, it did have a couple of 'odd' features - the grill would occasionally shoot fire out of the front and across the control knobs, disabling the users from turning off the fire-breathing grill! Cooking Christmas dinner in a tiny oven with a double hob however was a challenge we hadn't considered prior to Christmas eve. The turkey therefore got butchered and cooked in instalments over the next few days - the glory of the crown being the centre piece for Christmas day. The veg and accompaniments included careful timing. We spent a relaxing day opening presents, cooking and eating.

Here are a few snapshots from the day:
